Mark's Canon Canon Rebel S II Page

The Rebel S II came out in 1992. This was another thrift shop buy for $30, body only. I wanted a film camera that could use the EF lenses I already have for the Canon EOS 20D. This Rebel also supports auto focus and has motorized film transport. Was surprised that it works perfectly. I've mounted FD and M42 lenses on it with adapters. With non-EF lenses you set the aperture, and let the Rebel set the speed. Speeds go from 1 second to 1/2000th. This is the model S with a built-in flash. It has an "SF" Soft Focus mode for portraits that shoots a second exposure slightly out of focus. With the camera doing the focusing, exposure setting and film advancing you can concentrate on composition. It's also very light, which helps on long walks in search of subjects.

5-8-23 Shots from first test roll.

7-16-24: Next roll, taken with Kentmere 100 ASA developed for 8 minutes in Caffenol-C (instant coffee). Most of these images were edited, the roll came out dark and muddy. The test pattern shows how badly they turned out. This roll was shared with the Fujica STX-1, and the images look the same. Suspect that my attempt to standardize development temperature at 20 degrees C was a mistake. The instructions for Caffenol just say "room temperature", which varies a lot from summer to winter. Next roll developed in warmer water. All images were shot with an Vivitar 28-210mm F4.2-6.5 EF-mount lens. The dark kitchen flash test used the Canon 430EX II dedicated flash.
